Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the US annually, 55,500 of them are in California and 135 died as a result. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will experience sexual assault in their lifetime, 90% of abusers are people children know, love and trust. Studies show that about 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children. More than 90% of abusers are people children know, love and trust. 30-40% of victims are abused by a family member. 50% are abused by someone outside of the family whom they know and trust. Evidence that a child has been sexually abused is not always obvious, and many children do not report that they have been abused.
